Entering the Environmental Management and Recycling businesses in Myanmar

Construction of the country's first controlled landfill

DOWA Eco‐System Co., Ltd. (14‐1 Sotokanda, 4‐chome, Chiyoda‐ku, Tokyo; Capital: ¥1 billion; President: Kenichi Sasaki), a subsidiary of DOWA Holdings Co., Ltd. (same location; Capital: ¥36.4 billion; President: Masao Yamada) has established a subsidiary to be engaged in the waste treatment business in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. The company plans to start operating the business in October 2015.

Given the progress of Myanmar’s economic open‐door policy, the number of overseas companies entering the country has been increasing rapidly, and measures are being promoted for early development of core infrastructure, such as traffic systems and power grids. This is expected to result in an increasing amount of industrial waste, and it is expected to be increasingly necessary to secure waste treatment capacity and ensure proper treatment.

DOWA Eco‐System has been operating Environmental Management and Recycling businesses including waste treatment, metal recycling, and soil remediation businesses in Southeast Asia and China in addition to Japan. The waste treatment business is an essential infrastructure for various industries, including the manufacturing industry. This is why the company has decided to start a business at the Thilawa Special Economic Zone, which is being developed through cooperation between Myanmar and Japan. The newly‐established subsidiary plans to construct a controlled landfill which conforms to international technical guidelines*. This facility will be the first of its kind in Myanmar. The new company will also provide comprehensive waste management services including not only landfilling but also collection and transportation of waste and intermediate treatment or recycling of waste as appropriate for the property of waste. It will thus respond to demand for proper treatment from diverse industries, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of industries in Myanmar.

By taking advantage of its technologies and experience developed in Japan, Southeast Asia, and China, DOWA Eco‐System will continue to contribute to solving various environmental problems in Asian countries, which are expected to continue growing.
