Flowchart of Waste Treatment

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) Complete Detoxification Treatment

Three of DOWA ECO-SYSTEM's facilities (ECO-SYSTEM SANYO, ECO-SYSTEM AKITA, ECO-SYSTEM CHIBA) have obtained licenses as Fluorocarbon Destruction Operators to perform CFCs destruction by thermal decomposition using the heat produced by waste disposal.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) Complete Detoxification Treatment
  • High efficiency for Detoxification of CFCs - more than 99.999% degradation.
  • Designated as a “Model Project on CFCs Destruction” by the Ministry of the Environment (Akita Prefecture) since 1996 (ECO-SYSTEM AKITA).
  • The heat produced by the incineration of waste is recaptured for energy, resulting in a substantial saving.
  • The amount of chlorofluorocarbon (CFCs) that DOWA ECO-SYSTEM destroyed in 2003 was about 58 tons. The effect of this reduction of greenhouse gaseous emissions corresponds approximately to a total Carbon Dioxide Reduction of 130,000 tons per year.

Countermeasures against Dioxins

DOWA Group has been working on remediation of dioxin, one of the most toxic industrial chemicals used in human history, since before the implementation of governmental regulations.

We have been able to significantly degrade dioxin down to the extremely low level of 1/50th of the established reference value (RV) by high-temperature incinerators which permit almost complete decomposition of dioxin, using emission control designs such as quick cooling of exhaust (which helps prevent re-formation of dioxin) and a dioxin absorbing tower, etc.

Integrated System of DOWA ECO-SYSTEM Group

DOWA ECO-SYSTEM is able to coordinate all stages of projects within our organization, from transportation, neutralization and incineration to the final treatment, even for substances that are difficult to treat, such as sulfate pitch, properly, legally and safely.

In 2004, an amendment to Japan's Waste Management and Public Cleansing Law designated “sulfate pitch”, which is extremely hazardous to human health and the environment, a designated hazardous waste. The storage, collection, delivery and disposal of sulfate pitch is subject to the rigorous standards of the law.

Optimization of Technologies for Waste Management and Energy Consumption

Not only does DOWA ECO-SYSTEM provide safe and proper remediation technologies, we also pursue energy optimization strategies to minimize the environmental impact of operations and to maximize the waste-to-energy potential in various ways, including maintaining superior incineration conditions, etc.

Controlled Landfills

GREEN FILL KOSAKA

In December 2004, DOWA ECO-SYSTEM established “GREEN FILL KOSAKA,” one of Japan's largest capacity private-sector controlled landfills (total capacity: 2.7 million cubic meters) in northern Akita Prefecture.

Added to the already-operating controlled landfills in Odate, Akita Prefecture (total capacity: 2.0 million cubic meters), DOWA ECO-SYSTEM has strengthened their capability as a controlled landfills provider.

Construction of New Furnace

Beginning in April 2008 in the Tokyo metropolitan area, DOWA ECO-SYSTEM will start up one of Japan's largest furnaces for disposal of waste materials.

ECO-SYSTEM CHIBA's incinerator for industrial wastes is located in the waterfront area of Chiba Prefecture, which helps to reduce transportation costs and environmental risks. The modern facility has the capacity to treat a variety of industrial wastes, including difficult-to-treat wastes.
