DOWA ECO-SYSTEM is the premiere soil remediation company thanks to the synergy of experienced human resources, technological flexibility, and a well-developed infrastructure. Environmental risks are controlled by the most effective methods applicable to the specific task.
DOWA ECO-SYSTEM's Soil Remediation Operations
For any challenges that you are facing involving soil and water contamination, in whatever combination of contaminants.
DOWA ECO-SYSTEM's Soil Remediation Operations can offer you comprehensive integrated services from investigation of site contamination, to remediation of existing conditions, to post-clean-up monitoring.
We will assess any and all hazardous conditions and environmental risks comprehensively and select the best treatment method, such as: soil washing, chemical/thermal decomposition, or biological decomposition (Bioremediation). We address contaminants of all sorts: not only heavy metals, etc., but also VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), from oil pollution to buried wastes and complex contamination.

Decomposition by Iron Powder Designed for Soil Remediation (by the DOWA Group)
High Level of Remediation Performance
- Proprietary iron powder method for soil remediation that was developed and is continuously improved by DOWA ECO-SYSTEM.
- Effective using a small amount of iron powder applied directly to soil.
- Capable of decomposing cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (c-DCE) and dichloromethane, which are not easily degraded by conventional iron powder treatment.
DIM (Direct Iron Mixing) Method – Efficient Operation
- Uses a tri-axial auger; Iron powder mixing up to 60 meters below ground level
- Mixes soil and iron powder with air (preventing sludge-ing of the soil)
- Does not require berms
Soil Washing
- One of the largest soil washing plants in Japan (capacity: 50,000 tons per month.)
- Pretreatment permits remediation of soil with “complex contamination, such as mixtures of oil and VOCs”
- Nation's first certified “Contaminated Soil Treatment Plant”

Various Additional Remediation Technologies
Pump and Treat
- A popular remediation approach that involves pumping contaminated groundwater to the surface and purifying the extracted groundwater through absorption of contaminants (petroleum). This method is more effective used in conjunction with Chemical Oxidation Treatment or Bioremediation.
- Increased effectiveness by using several techniques in combination.
Bioremediation
Bioremediation uses microorganisms to promote decomposition of oil and petroleum products.
This is a low-cost, low-energy method, applicable to low concentrations of biodegradable oil or petroleum products, using microbes to minimize harmful byproducts. There are several major types of bioremediation technologies: Landfarming, Biopiles for ex situ bioremedation, and Bioventing and Biosparging for in situ bioremedation.
In Situ Chemical Oxidation Technologies
In in situ oxidation, remediation is performed by injecting chemical oxidants into the contaminated soil in order to chemically decompose the petroleum products in the contaminated area. The effectiveness of this technology depends on the concentration level and chemical characteristics of the target contaminant.
Thermal Treatment – Safe Detoxifying Treatment
Mid-Temperature Thermal Treatment Method
- Mid-Temperature Thermal Treatment volatilizes oil by incinerating the soil at temperatures ranging from 750 °F to 930°F, to vaporize and degrade the petroleum substances, after which the remaining contaminants are then absorbed from the vapors.
High-Temperature Thermal Treatment
- Combustion of soil at more than 1,470°F.
- Effective for complex contamination
- Applicable for soil mixed with buried wastes
Contaminated Soil Remediation Facilities
DOWA ECO-SYSTEM operates Japan's first Certified “Contaminated Soil Treatment Plant” in compliance with Japan's “Soil Contamination Countermeasures Law,” in recognition of DOWA ECO-SYSTEM's outstanding experience and capability.
ECO-SYSTEM HANAOKA received the initial authorization in July 2003.
Only a few months later, in October 2003, DOWA ECO-SYSTEM group received the second authorization issued under the new law in Japan for their Akita plant (ECO-SYSTEM AKITA.)
The principal provision of the Soil Contamination Countermeasures Law is a ban on the removal of contaminated soil in a Designated Area; remediation should be conducted at the site. If any contaminated soil is taken out of the site, it must be disposed of by the disposal methods prescribed by the Minister of Environment's Announcement No. 20 and using a contaminated soil treatment facility authorized by the prefectural governor.
